My numbers look nothing like these examples. Are they wrong?

The dollars will differ; the shape shouldn't. Every workable budget in any city does the same four things: fixed bills below income, essentials estimated from real statements, something (anything) flowing to savings, and fun money planned on purpose rather than leaked. If your rent is double the example's, the wants lane shrinks to make room and the structure holds. When the structure CAN'T hold because essentials alone exceed income, that's a signal to visit Starting From $0 and the income pages, not to keep re-arranging the same insufficient number.

Why does every example end at exactly zero?

Unassigned money is the quietest leak in budgeting. It feels like a surplus in your head and spends like one twice. Assigning the remainder, even if the assignment is literally 'buffer: $65', converts it from vague permission into a visible line you can defend. Zero-based enders consistently report the strange experience of feeling richer on the same income; nothing changed except that every dollar acquired a name.
