Fixed vs. Variable Expenses

Fixed expenses are decided rarely and charged always; variable expenses are decided constantly. Each type has its own attack.

Know which is which

Fixed

Rent, insurance, phone, subscriptions, loan payments. Same-ish number, arrives on schedule, negotiated occasionally.

Variable

Groceries, fuel, utilities (partly), entertainment, clothing. Moves with choices and seasons.

Why it matters

Fixed costs are cut in a few phone calls a YEAR; variable costs are managed in small choices a WEEK. Different muscles.

Fixed costs are cut in phone calls a year. Variable costs are managed in choices a week. Different muscles entirely.

The attack plan

Fixed: schedule an annual raid

One afternoon a year: re-shop insurance, call internet retention, audit subscriptions, check refinance rates. Gains repeat monthly with zero willpower.

Variable: set caps, not vows

A weekly grocery number and an eating-out number. Envelopes if a category keeps escaping.

Watch fixed creep

Streaming price bumps, insurance drift, 'temporary' subscriptions. Fixed costs grow silently unless raided.

Verdiep je verder

What exactly happens on an annual 'raid day'?

Block two hours. Pull the last statement and list every recurring charge. Then, in order: three auto/renter insurance quotes at identical coverage (the single highest-yield call), internet retention for the current promo, the phone plan against two prepaid competitors, and a subscription cull with the five-year cost visible. Most households come out $50-$150 a month lighter, permanently, and the whole exercise repeats in one afternoon next year. Put it on the calendar like a dentist appointment; it pays considerably better.

My variable spending swings wildly. How do caps help?

Caps convert an open question ('how much should groceries be?') into a closed one ('is there grocery money left this week?'). The weekly number does the deciding once, so the aisle stops being a negotiation. Two mechanics make caps stick: make the money visible (a prepaid card, a cash envelope, or just a note on the fridge with the week's number), and size the cap from your real statements minus ten percent; aspiration-priced caps fail by Thursday and take the whole system's credibility with them.
