Needs vs. Wants: The Honest Version

The category isn't the item, it's the version of the item. Food is a need; $19 delivered poke is mostly a want wearing a need's coat.

The honest test

Needs

Without it, health, housing, work or legal standing suffers within the month: rent, basic groceries, utilities, transport to work, medicine, insurance, minimum debt payments.

Wants

Everything that upgrades a need or adds pleasure: restaurants, streaming, newer car than needed, brand preferences, hobbies. Wants are not sins; they're the reward lane, sized on purpose.

The version rule

Ask 'is there a cheaper version that does the same job?' The gap between the version you have and the cheapest workable version is want-spending inside a need.

Where people argue with themselves

The car

Getting to work: need. The $560/month model when a $290 one drives the same route: $270 of want.

The phone

A working phone: need (and a job-search tool). The flagship upgrade every year: want.

Groceries vs. dining

Groceries: need. Restaurants and delivery: want, budgeted happily and counted honestly.

Gym, courses, therapy

Health and skills spending can be a genuine need. The test is function, not fun, and some of the best money you'll spend is here.

Isn't this framework just permission to judge people's spending?

It points the other way: the version rule is a tool you run on your OWN spending, and its output is information, not shame. Discovering that $270 of your car payment is a want doesn't obligate you to sell the car. It tells you the true price of keeping it, so the choice becomes conscious. Plenty of people run the math and happily keep the nicer version; the budget simply makes room somewhere else. Judgment-free doesn't mean information-free.

Where do gym memberships, therapy and courses actually land?

Run the function test, not the fun test. Spending that maintains your health, employability or stability is doing need-work even when it's enjoyable: a $40 gym habit that keeps your back working, therapy that keeps you employed, a certification that raises your wage. The version rule still applies (the $200/month boutique gym contains $160 of want if the $40 one serves), but don't let a tight month amputate the spending that holds everything else up. Cut wants-in-needs'-clothing before needs-that-look-like-wants.
