Tax Debt

The IRS is a surprisingly structured creditor with published payment options, and a magnet for predatory 'tax relief' marketing. Use the official machinery; it's better than the ads.

The official options

File even when you can't pay

The failure-to-FILE penalty is much larger than failure-to-PAY. Filing on time with $0 attached is strictly better than hiding.

Payment plans are routine

Short-term and long-term IRS installment agreements can be set up online for most balances. Interest continues but collection pressure stops.

Offer in Compromise is real but narrow

The IRS settles for less only when full payment is genuinely unlikely; check the official OIC pre-qualifier, not a billboard's promise.

Hardship status exists

'Currently Not Collectible' pauses collection when paying would prevent basic living expenses. Documented, official, free to request.

The IRS is a strict but procedural creditor: every real option is published, free, and better than the ad on daytime TV.

Protect yourself

'Pennies on the dollar' ads are the warning label

The FTC has repeatedly acted against tax-relief mills charging thousands for free-to-request statuses. If it's on daytime TV, read the FTC page first.

Free real help exists

Low Income Taxpayer Clinics (LITCs) represent qualifying taxpayers in IRS disputes free or nearly free; VITA files current returns free.

State taxes have parallel machinery

State revenue departments run their own payment plans. Same rule: official site first.

और गहराई से जानें

What actually happens if I just don't file?

The system files for you, badly. A 'substitute for return' uses only income reports (no deductions, no credits, no dependents), producing the largest possible bill, plus the failure-to-file penalty (up to 10× the failure-to-pay one), plus interest, and the collection machinery starts from that inflated number. Filing late but voluntarily, even years late, almost always shrinks the damage, restarts refund eligibility on recent years, and reopens every payment option. The person who files and owes is in a dramatically better procedural position than the person who hides; the IRS's own machinery is built around that distinction.

Who actually qualifies for an Offer in Compromise?

Fewer people than the ads imply: OIC approvals hinge on the IRS's math showing full collection is genuinely unlikely: low income, minimal equity, and a 'reasonable collection potential' below the balance. The official pre-qualifier tool gives an honest read in ten minutes, free. For everyone else, the workhorse options are the online installment agreement (routine) and currently-not-collectible status (real hardship, documented). The 'pennies on the dollar' industry charges four figures to file the same free forms, frequently for clients who were never OIC candidates. The FTC's case files on tax-relief mills make sobering reading.
