Scam-Proofing Yourself
The five patterns behind nearly every financial scam.

Scams evolve costumes, not skeletons. Five patterns cover nearly everything: URGENCY ('act in 10 minutes'), AUTHORITY costumes ('IRS/bank/sheriff calling'), ODD PAYMENT RAILS (gift cards, wire, crypto — chosen because they're irreversible), SECRECY ('don't tell your bank'), and TOO-GOOD math (guaranteed returns, doubled crypto).
Two rules defeat most of them: real organizations never demand gift cards or crypto, and any urgent request survives a callback to the official number YOU look up. Hanging up and dialing back costs ninety seconds and breaks the script entirely.
If money already moved: contact your bank/card immediately (time matters), report at ReportFraud.ftc.gov, and skip the shame — these are industrial operations that catch smart people daily. Reporting is how patterns get shut down.
