How Big Should Your Emergency Fund Be?

Size it to your real essential month, not to a slogan.

5 min de lecture· Dernière mise à jour: 2026-08-14· Par l'équipe éditoriale, vérifié par rapport aux sources ci-dessous ·
Réponse rapideCount one month of true essentials — housing, utilities, food, transport, insurance, medicine, minimum debt payments — then aim for 3 of those months as a baseline, 6 if income is variable, you're a single earner, or a job loss in your field takes long to replace. Build to $1,000 first; the rest comes in layers.

Pourquoi c'est important

The fund's job is to buy time without borrowing at 22%. Sized right, a layoff becomes a runway instead of a freefall — and knowing your exact number turns an anxious blur into a target with a date.

Les étapes

1

Compute your essential month

Not your normal spending — the survival version with wants paused. For many households it's 60-75% of normal spending.

2

Pick your multiplier honestly

Two steady incomes and in-demand skills: 3 months is a strong floor. Commission income, gig work, one earner, specialized field, or kids: lean 6.

3

Build it in layers, not one climb

$500 → $1,000 → 1 month → 3 → 6. Each layer is a real upgrade in safety; celebrate them as finishes, not fractions.

4

Park it where it's safe and slightly boring

High-yield savings or a money market account with federal insurance. Not invested — this money's job is existing, not growing.

5

Refill before anything else after use

Using it is the system working. The only rule: the refill jumps the queue ahead of extra debt payments and investing until it's whole.

Worked example: $2,400 essential month

Essentials: rent $1,150 + utilities $210 + food $500 + transport $220 + insurance $180 + minimums $140$2,400
3-month baseline$7,200
6-month target (variable income)$14,400
At $300/month saved$7,200 in 24 months — with $1,000 reached by month 4
