Your First $100: Start Here

The first $100 is not about the money; it's about becoming a person who has savings. Every later milestone reuses the machinery you build this month.

The fastest honest routes

Automate $10 a week

Ten weeks, zero decisions. Most banks schedule recurring transfers in two minutes.

Sell one thing

The console you don't play, the bike in the garage: one listing often clears $100 alone.

Bank one cut

Cancel one forgotten subscription and move its exact amount to savings monthly. $15/month is $100 by summer.

Round-up sweeps

Card round-ups quietly gather $15-$40 a month. Set it and check back.

The first $100 isn't about the money. It's about becoming a person who has savings; everything after reuses that identity.

Set it up right the first time

Separate account, boring bank distance

Not a shoebox (fire, theft, temptation) and not checking (spending gravity). A savings account one transfer away.

Name it

'Emergencies' converts a number into a promise. Named accounts get raided less.

Tell one person

Accountability is free performance enhancement. A partner, a friend, a sticky note on the fridge.

Why does such a small amount matter psychologically?

Because the first $100 collapses a story. 'I can't save' survives any amount of intention but not a jar with $100 in it. Suddenly the question shifts from whether to how much, which is a different life. Behavior research keeps finding that the streak matters more than the sum early on: ten consecutive $10 weeks builds more durable saving than one heroic $100 month, because the identity ('I'm someone who saves every Friday') is the asset. The balance is just its receipt.

Shoebox, jar, or account: does the container matter?

More than it seems. Cash at home is spendable in one impulse, burnable in one accident, and invisible to habit-tracking. The right container adds exactly one day of friction: a no-fee savings account, ideally at a different bank than checking, with no attached card. Fast enough for real trouble, slow enough that Tuesday-night impulses die in transit. Name it something with a job, like 'Emergencies', because accounts with names get raided measurably less than accounts with numbers.
