Working backwards from a target and a date turns a wish into a monthly number you can either afford or not. If you cannot, the honest options are a later date, a smaller target, or more income; the arithmetic does not offer a fourth.

Over a horizon of a year or two, interest barely moves the answer. The monthly amount and the deadline do almost all of the work.
